A COOL MILLION (“ACM”) is a public arts initiative for climate awareness led by artists and institutions to expand environmental justice programming and support the conservation of one million acres of land central to the California hydrological system.

Partnering with For Freedoms, ACM collaborates with artists and art institutions across California to install climate-related artworks on billboards, museum facades, and museum-based signage across California and online to coincide with Earth Day 2022 (April 22). This project is initiated by Haley Mellin and Micki Meng.

Institutions involved in this initiative include Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, The Broad, Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Getty Museum, Hammer Museum, ICA San Francisco, LACMA, Museum of the African Diaspora, MOCA, REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater), San Jose Museum of Art, SFMOMA, and Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts.

Confirmed artists include Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Katherine Bernhardt, Petra Cortright, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Madeline Hollander, Sayre Gomez, Hulda Guzmán, Josh Kline, Rebecca Quaytman, Hugo McCloud, David Benjamin Sherry, Robin F. Williams, and Nicole Wittenberg

This partnership between artists and institutions aims to raise funds to protect one million acres of critical hydrological-related forest, a conservation effort immediately relevant to California and the mitigation of the broader climate crisis. ACM is partnering with Art into Acres to support permanent and indigenous led land conservation, to be completed by 2025. Funds garnered through the ACM initiative will be doubled through matching funds.

ACM is a project supported by Art + Climate Action, a collective of California arts professionals and advocates responding to the climate crisis.
